Serge Gainsbourg: "L'homme à la tête de chou"

Serge Gainsbourg is one the greastest singer-song writer of french music industry. Gainsbourg's extremely varied musical style and individuality make him difficult to categorize. His legacy has been firmly established, and he is often regarded as one of the world's most influential popular musicians.

For me Serge Gainsbourg is THE french artists of all time: a poet,  a dark guy, a HEAVY smoker and drinker, a womenizer who flirted with so many beautiful women....

I died a little too soon but i love him so i had to share my passion for him.

Gainsbourg: The Man

Serge Gainsbourg was born Lucien Ginsburg in Paris, France, the son of Russian Jewish parents, Joseph Ginsburg and OlgaBessman , who fled to France after the 1917 Russian Revolution. His childhood was profoundly affected by the occupation of France by Nazi Germany, during which he and his family, as Jews, were forced to wear the yellow star and eventually flee Paris. Before he was 30 years old, Gainsbourg was a disillusioned painter, but earned his living as a piano player in bars.

His early stage carreer was hard because of his physical appereance. Gainsbourg was feeling rejected because he thought he was an ugly guy : "l'Homme à la tête de chou, half vegetable, half man" (Je suis l'homme, moitié légume et moitié mec...)

Gainsbourg: The Artist

1. Early Work
His early songs were influenced by Boris Vian and were largely in the vein of old-fashioned chanson. Very early, however, Gainsbourg began to move beyond this and experiment with a succession of different musical styles: jazz early on, pop in the 1960s, rock and reggae in the 1970s, and electronica in the 1980s.

Many of his songs contained themes with a morbid or sexual twist in them. An early success, "Le Poinçonneur des Lilas", describes the day in the life of a Paris Métro ticket man whose job it is to stamp holes in passengers' tickets. Gainsbourg describes this chore as so monotonous that the man eventually thinks of putting a hole into his own head and being buried in another



 
 

 
2. Les années yéyé: Gainsbourg, the song-writer
 
Gainsbourg did not have much success with his jazz tune nor with his poetic songs. To earn money he decided to write songs for others. He would write his own lyrics with his own message but would let mostly young starletts of the time sing them. (He would also become a rich man)
 
He had his first success with Juliette Gréco (Javanaise) but the hits were with Françoise Hardy and more importantly France Gall who won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "les Sucettes". "Les Sucettes" ("Lollipops"), caused a scandal in France: Gainsbourg had written the song with double-meanings and strong sexual innuendo, of which the singer was apparently unaware when she recorded it. Whereas Gall thought that the song was about a girl enjoying lollipops, it was really about oral sex. The controversy arising from the song, although a big hit for Gall, threw her career off-track in France for several years.



 

 
3. Serge Gainsbourg et Brigitte Bardot
 
No need to introduce Brigitte Bardot, she was THE most beautiful and demanded woman and the 60's. Serge Gainsbourg wrote her a few songs to sing (Harley Davidson) and they had a short but intense romance while Mrs Bardot was still married. They also made wonderful duos like Bonnie and Clyde and the famous "Je t'aime... moi non plus", which featured explicit lyrics and simulated sounds of female orgasm.
 
The song appeared that year on an LP, Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg. Originally recorded with Brigitte Bardot, it was released with future girlfriend Birkin when Bardot backed out. While Gainsbourg declared it the "ultimate love song," it was considered too "hot"; the song was censored in various countries, and in France even the toned-down version was suppressed. The Vatican made a public statement citing the song as offensive. However, despite all the controversy, it charted within the top ten in many European countries
 
Gainsbourg dedicated his song Initials B.B to Brigitte Bardot.

4. Les années 1970 : décennie majeure
 
Histoire de Melody Nelson was released in 1971. This concept album, produced and arranged by Jean-Claude Vannier, tells the story of a Lolita-esque affair, with Gainsbourg as the narrator. This album made quite a scandal because Melody -like Lolita- is only 15 years old (14 automne et 15 été)
 

 
 

 
In 1975, he released the album Rock Around the Bunker, a rock album written entirely on the subject of the Nazis. Gainsbourg used black comedy, as he and his family suffered during World War II. While a child in Paris, Gainsbourg had worn the yellow badge as the mark of a Jew. Rock Around the Bunker belonged in the mid-1970s "retro" trend
 

 
The next year saw the release of another major work, L'Homme à tête de chou (Cabbage-Head Man), featuring the new character Marilou and sumptuous orchestral themes. Cabbage-Head Man is one of his nicknames, as it refers to his ears but also the blind love he has for Marilou, paying everything she wants and have nothng in return. At the end of the album (Marilou sous la neige) he would eventually kill her. For me this album is also the beginning of Gainsbarre, Gainsbourg alter ego, being a kind of Mr Hyde hiding in him, alcohol, cigarettes are mostly the reason of that change but also again the desire to provoc. His voice is really different, but the style and lyrics are still there.
 

 
 

 
 

 
5. Final years
 
After a turbulent 13-year-long relationship, Jane Birkin left Gainsbourg.[9] In the 1980s, near the end of his life, Gainsbourg became a regular figure on French TV. His appearances seemed devoted to his controversial sense of humour and provocation: burning 500 francs bill to prostest against heavy taxation, saying on national TV he wanted to fuck Whitney Houston. Treating an ex porn star and future singer Catherine Ringer a "whore"
 

 
 

 
 

 
Gainsbourg: The Icon
 
Gainsbourg died on March 2, 1991 of a heart attack. He was buried in the Jewish lot of the Montparnasse Cemetery, in Paris. His funeral brought Paris to a standstill, and French President François Mitterrand said of him, "He was our Baudelaire, our Apollinaire... He elevated the song to the level of art. His home at the well-known address rue de Verneuil is still covered in graffiti and poems (Go check it out)
 
Since his death, Gainsbourg's music has reached legendary stature in France. His lyrical brilliance in French has left an extraordinary legacy. His music, always progressive, covered many styles: jazz, ballads, mambo, lounge, reggae, pop (including adult contemporary pop, kitsch pop, yé-yé pop), disco, bossa nova, and rock and roll. He has gained a following in the English-speaking world with many non-mainstream artists finding his arrangements highly influential. The band Phoenix said they were only listening Gainsbourg for french inspiration
 
A feature film titled Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) was released in France in January 2010, which is based on the graphic novel by the writer-director of the film, Joann Sfar. Gainsbourg is portrayed by Eric Elmosnino.

American Club Assas: Un premier Bilan

When I thought about creating this student group a year ago, I never thought it would be that amazing !
Not only we developed a real bound between each other but we also managed to have this love and pride for OUR association. Let's keep it up !

Faisons un petit bilan de l'année 2010 de l'American Club Assas:

- Lundi 3 Mai: The First Meeting: Peu d'entre vous le savez mais ACA avait déjà commencer à faire des rencontres l'année (universitaire) dernière vers la fin de l'année grâce à la coopération de Estelle Halevi, directrice du programme de Stanford à Paris qui nous a fait confiance pour organiser ces rencontres. Ce premier atelier-débat était le premier d'une longue série on l'espère, avec un groupe de Stanfordiens génial !! Un grand merci à Eugénie notre vice-présidente, aussi qui m'a aidé et soutenu dans toutes nos démarches et activités !

- Vendredi 8 octobre: The Coming-Out: Notre première rencontre avec les étudiants de première année à la pré-rentrée à Vaugirard. Sous les applaudissements de ces dames, notre Elio nationale a encore fait tourner des têtes. Mais surtout il a représenté l'association comme il se devait, du FUN, des RENCONTRES, du SWAG. Merci à lui et à tous les premières années qui nous ont rejoint, vous avez fait le bon choix !!

- Jeudi 14 octobre: The Coming-Out 2: Première rencontre avec les élèves du centre ASSAS. Beaucoup de belle rencontre et de bon retour qui nous ont donné confiance pour la suite ! (Julie et Ferdinand avec moi à la rencontre des étudiants)

- Vendredi 22 octobre: The Party: La launch party, beer cups importé de New-York, nos amis américains de Stanford et NYU, l'Eclipse Café comme terrain de jeu, des rencontres, de l'anglais, du français, des cocktails = ACA spirit !! Un grand moment.

- Lundi 25 octobre: Rencontre avec les étudiants de Stanford, des discussions intéressantes, l'apprentissage des subtilités du langage "d'jeunz" en France pour les américains ("en mode", "kiffer", "poser", "grave" et j'en passe).

- Vendredi 5 novembre: The Visit: Visite à l'Assemblée Nationale organisé de main de maître par Flora. Visite très intéressante pour les américains et pour les français car on en apprend toujours sur notre pays !!

- Lundi 8 novembre: The Preparation: premier examen-blanc TOEIC au centre de ressources à Vaugirard avec Margaux à la baguette. Toutes les feuilles en place, des petites viennoiseries pour les petites faims, un examen type ACA quoi !!! On a eu quelques retour sympathiques, ce qui fait toujours plaisir. Et surtout, félicitation à notre ami Dwight Dolin qui a scoré 985 sur 990. Peut-être que grâce à nous mais il nous a confié que cela l'avait énormément aidé. Congrats to you Dwight !!

- Vendredi 2 décembre: The Diner: Pour remercier tout nos adhérents mais aussi nos amis de Stanford, Valérie et Margaux nous ont préparé un fabuleux diner Thanksgiving. Au programme: Turkey, cheesecake, des sourires, des rencontres, du karaoké, de la bonne humeur... EPIC !!!! Une occasion pour moi de remercier Valérie pour son accueil et toute l'équipe et les gens de Melun qui font partis de notre assoc'. Merci de nous avoir rejoint, on vous oublie surtout pas et 2011 sera aussi l'année Melun !!

Comme vous le voyez on a été très actifs mais surtout ce qui nous a aidé, c'est votre soutien. Vous les adhérents, les sympathisants, qui avez soutenu nos initiatives, cela nous a vraiment boosté.

Déjà plein de beaux souvenirs et ça ne fait que commencer.
2010 était AWESOME, 2011 sera LEGENDARY !!!

Paris to NYC: The final chapter

Salut les gars, désolé pour l'attente mais voilà (enfin) ma conclusion de notre séjour à New-York.

C'est difficile de résumer deux semaines à New-York en quelques lignes, mais je vais essayer d’être aussi direct que possible.

Je vous avais laissé avec quelques particularités de New-York et des new-yorkais. Je resterais concentré sur cet aspect culturel dans cet article également.

Tout d'abord, Flora et moi avons remarqué un rapport différent des new-yorkais aux différentes activités de service. Par exemple : le doorman qui sort le chien la journée, la nounou et les différentes attitudes que la mère doit adopter envers elle et l'enfant (il y a même des conférences pour ça), des chauffeurs partout tout au long de l'Upper East Side sur la 5^ème… Ce sont des choses qu'on ne voit pas à Paris.

Sur cette notion de service, on peut faire le pont avec tout ce qui touche à la restauration avec le fameux "tip", souvent un casse-tête mathématiques pour nous les européens (comme si l'ajout des taxes sur la note ne suffisait pas). J'ai entendu que c'était 15% de la facture totale, ou encore que c'est la multiplication par deux des taxes de la note, mais je ne sais toujours pas vraiment si la somme que je mets est exacte (si je la mets) !

Il faut les comprendre, ces pauvres serveur(se)s, les "tips" représentent en réalité la majeure partie de leur salaire. Donc, comme ils le disent si gentiment à « Crif Dogs » : « Tips, you cheap bastards ! ».

Je reste dans la restauration pour faire une petite observation. Vous connaissez le slogan de Dunkin Donuts "America runs on dunking" ? Et bien avec Flora en a pensé à un autre, "America feeds on Latinos".

Rien de péjoratif ici, mais la grande majorité des restaurants, dinners, fast food où je suis allé avait des latinos derrière les fourneaux. Ces même latinos à qui on veut fermer les frontières au Sud du, expulser à tout va, ces même latinos qui sont désormais plus en plus nombreux aux Etats-Unis aujourd'hui, à New-York comme en Californie.

Enfin je voudrais finir ce mini-report sur New-York par l'une des choses les plus importantes que j'ai apprises à New-York. Cette ville est une ville de célibataires. Définitivement. Trop de travail, pas assez de temps, les mecs sont des cons, les filles ne savent pas ce qu'elles veulent… Les "relationships" se font rares tandis que le "dating" atteint des sommets. Les femmes disent que ce sont les hommes qui ne sautent pas le pas. Mais comment les plaindre, IT’S NEW-YORK BABY !!!!!!!

Paris to NYC: first days - les petites particularites de New-york

Salut les gars,

Je change de cafe pour me retrouver quelque block plus bas dans le Lower East Side, quartier qui renait apres des annees sombres et qui se transforme en un Williamsburg plus classe.

Voila l'une des particularites de New-york, les quartiers changent constamment et l'effervescence artistique arrive de partout.

Ce qui frappe aussi c'est le nombre de communaute presente dans cette ville et qui y cohabite. Un jour on rencontre un vendeur de hot dog egyptien, venus pour donner une meilleur education a ces 4 enfants, un autre je rencontre une artiste australienne venus tenter sa chance dans la ville ou tout est possible....

C'est cela aussi New-york, un grand melting pot ou chacun veut reussir et aspire a un meilleur destin que dans leurs pays d"origine, ou juste une envie de faire leur trou, ici on parle de HUSTLING. C'est l'etat d'esprit de cette ville je pense.

Autres particularite par rapport a Paris, les rues de New-York sont remplis des meilleurs amis de l'homme: chuihuahua, workshire, gros, petit, il y a des chiens PARTOUT, je dois avouer mon amour pour ces petits bout de chou, j"en deviens un peu gaga, bref...

Quand on se promene dans la ville, les casquettes NY des yankees sont legion, on verrait pas ca avec le PSG a Paris ! bon c"est vrai que beaucoup s'en foutent des Yankees.

Derniere infos, les new-yorkais sont tres silencieux dans le metro, tout le monde avec ces casques et autres ecouteurs, un autre signe du cote "je suis dans mon truc, je fonce" peut-etre.

C'est toute ces choses que j'aime a New-York et qui font que cette ville est si enorme. A vous de venir la decouvrir, moi je vous donne juste un petit apercu.

Paris to NYC: first days

Hi guys,

Already 5 days in the big apple, sadly the weather is really shitty but Hey its New-York !! So im seating in this cute alternative coffee-bakery shop in the East Village to write this article.

We (Julie and I) arrived on monday and started to hit town on tuesday. For information tuesday is NOT a good day to go to the museum guys because almost everyone of them is closed (MOMA, Whitney, guggenheim).
Anyway i still got my first bagel with bacon, egg and cheese, Julie got a bagel with cream cheese, ad some coffee and we were ready to go.

We first went to the East Village with all the cool coffee shop, thrift stores, restaurant.
When you Walk in New-York you get hungry really fast so we stopped to get THE BEST hot dogs in town at Crif Dogs. This is one of my favorite place in New-York and waiting for a year the Chihuahua (bacon-wrapped with sour cream and advocado) was definately worth it.

Next Stop ,Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the hipster place, the thrift store heaven with the well-known Beacon's closet, great stuff there, cheap, and the clothes are by colors so its easier.

New-York is overwhelming, so big, so many things to do, the subway seems so slow compare to Paris (kinda like a RER) but its because the distance are so much bigger.
Eventhough the weather is bad, we really enjoy being in New-york, we're starting to meet new people, Flora join us and the weekend is approaching so lot of bars, parties and adventures to come !!!!
